Margaret Mitchell is a textbook example of the Southern Belle with gumption, much like the heroine, Scarlett O’Hara in Mitchell’s own Gone With The Wind. I wanted the portrait to be sweet and quiet. Her hands are calmly folded in her lap clutching a hankie, a magnolia corsage pinned to her blouse. Gone With The Wind has many literary detractors but can’t be denied a place as one of, if not the greatest American novel of all time. I wanted to use “lazy and sitting on the front porch swing”, colors to depict her story. I love Margaret Mitchell for writing such a story of courage and sweeping majesty during the Great Depression when the country needed it most.
