Everyone’s eyes were on Abigail Adams. She was our second First Lady, married to President John Adams and was compared to her predecessor, much loved, Martha Washington. All eyes were on her. “Is she going to be like Martha?” “What is Martha going to think?” “Martha would NEVER do that!” Martha, Martha, Martha! Much is known about the relationship between Abigail and her husband. Abigail was a Woman of Letters and meticulously archived her letters to and from the President. Much of these letters is all we have of history at this time. Abigail was very bold and very visible during her husband’s administration. In this portrait I wanted her red, red, lips to punctuate the piece. She was gracious, she was learned, she was elegant…the Second First Lady, Abigail Adams.
