Eugene Field is probably most known as a poet for children. “The Children’s Poet”. Growing up in St. Louis, his father, was the lawyer for Dred and Lizzy Scott during one of the earlier cases to free themselves from slavery. Eugene always had an interest in writing. He had a great love of children and had eight children altogether, five of which survived. Eugene is best know for his poems: “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod” and “Little Boy Blue.” In this portrait, I use a short passage from one of his more patriotic poems: “With Trumpet and Drum.” I am drawn to Field for the mark he left on Children’s Literature. In the background, in black Backstitch is the actual house where he was born, ten blocks from my own house, which stands today and where this portrait quilt is housed.
