James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States and author of The Monroe Doctrine. Monroe's Presidency was marked by a disappearance of partisan politics known as the Era of Good Feelings, after the politically charged War of 1812. Unfortunately these "good feelings" did not endure, as for Monroe, his popularity undiminished. Quite the bargain shopper, Monroe made many good deals while in office. He purchased the state of Florida from Spain for a mere 5 million dollars. Upon leaving office he fell upon hard times selling his house to pay for debts. Many of these debts went unpaid and passed to his wife upon his death.
