Handel was one of the more prolific composers of the Baroque period of music. His themes and topics usually didn’t wander far from the mythological or the religious. A large percentage of his career saw him a ward of the British Empire creating works to be performed at Covent Garden which was the venue used for these operas and oratorios. I first marveled at his body of work…then focused on his voluminous costumes and wigs he was never seen without. I imagine being in his presence in August with no air-conditioning and high London humidity and infrequent bathing. I’m sure it wasn’t pretty. A sharp contrast to his music which was called “the voice of God.”
