Richard Nixon is probably the most hated and misunderstood of the Presidents of the United States. He is one of the few Presidents to have been impeached, leaving office in shame after an affair called Watergate broke, exposing the President’s penchant for taping conversations of government officials illegally. Taking a more cuddly view, I wanted to tell the story of the fruits of his journey to The People’s Republic of China in 1972. Chairman Mao Zedong gave Nixon two Giant Pandas as a gift, further opening communications between the United States and China. China then started using Giant Pandas as tokens of goodwill. This practiced was called “Panda Diplomacy.” Today ALL Giant Pandas in captivity are still owned by China. China “leases” the Pandas to zoos for the sum of around of a million dollars per year. There are currently only three zoos in the United States to display these beautiful creatures.
