Jerry Falwell was quite a powerful “evangelical.” He became pastor at 22 in 1956 of his own church and soon there after opened his own Christian College. In 1979, Falwell began the Moral Majority, a lobbyist group in support of “Christian values.” Along the way he was very verbal in his likes and dislikes. He liked Christians and those like minded as he. He hated Feminists, Abolitionists, Gays (including the Teletubby, Tinky Winky) and Pagans. The aforementioned Gays he called “the cause of 9/11”. He questioned the sincerity of Martin Luther King, Jr. He called Archbishop Desmond Tutu a phony. Falwell also disliked the public school system saying it should be his churches teaching our youth. I chose to take a stance of sorrow and pity for this man who made it his business to alienate himself from most of the country. It’s a shame in this age of Cafeteria Christianity the passage “Love Thy Neighbor” was no where to be found on his lunch tray.
