Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was the first mother of our country. This is the first portrait in a series of portrait quilts completely beaded. They are influenced by the candid portraiture of Andy Warhol. The First Lady (Martha being the first) presented as an iconic idol. No different than Warhol’s “Jackie”, “Marilyn” or “Mao”. The number of beads used for the surface, are mentioned in the title. The beads are 11mm Czech seed beads that are hand-sewn to the surface. Martha’s face depicts her great stoicism at a time when our country was in turbulent transition.
