O’Neill, a playwright, did not suffer from low self-esteem. He amassed four Pulitzers and was the father of Modern Theatre in America. O’Neill’s dramas were filled with the au currant style of “stream of consciousness” that New York theatre patrons loved to tell their friends they enjoyed. Mr. O’Neill over-used the comma and had sentences go on for scenes. The peacocks depicted at his side are symbols of vanity and hubris. The colors acidic and garish meant to represent the feeling one has staring at oneself too long in a mirror while grasping with food poisoning. This Broadway Icarus did live long enough to witness himself go slowly out of style.
